Our Unit Director, Professor George Chrousos, Among the World’s Elite Researchers
With great pride and emotion, the Endocrinology Unit of the Therapeutic Clinic at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) welcomes yet another international distinction for our Unit Director, Professor George Chrousos. In a recent feature published by the newspaper Proto Thema, Dr. Chrousos is named among eleven Greek scientists who rank among the global elite of researchers — scholars whose work is recognized by the world’s leading institutions, from Stanford and Columbia to CERN.
Professor George Chrousos — Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics and Endocrinology at NKUA, UNESCO Chair in Adolescent Health and Medicine, Director of the Research University Institute of Maternal and Child Health and Precision Medicine, and President of the Hellenic Pasteur Institute — stands as a living legend of the international medical community.
Dr. Chrousos’s research has fundamentally transformed the way science understands the effects of stress on the human body. His pioneering studies have illuminated the mechanisms of stress at the behavioral, neuroendocrine, cellular, and molecular levels, while his contributions to our understanding of human development — and adolescence in particular — remain invaluable.
According to data from the Institute of Scientific Information, Professor Chrousos:
- Is consistently ranked among the 100 most-cited physicians in the world in the fields of Clinical Medicine, Biology, and Biochemistry
- Is the most cited pediatrician and endocrinologist globally
- Is the most cited Greek physician to have worked and practiced in Greece
With an h-index of 209, 2,060 published works, and the editorship of 29 books, the Professor ranks on the prestigious Research.com platform at 117th place worldwide in the Medicine category, while simultaneously holding 1st place in Greece in both the Medicine category and the Top Scientists category.
For all of us at the NKUA Endocrinology Unit, the presence, guidance, and vision of Professor George Chrousos are a daily source of inspiration and a profound commitment. This distinction honors not only him and our University, but places Greek medical research firmly at the forefront of the global map.
We press forward with the same dedication — following in the footsteps of our teacher and director — committed to delivering the highest standard of healthcare and advancing scientific knowledge for the benefit of our patients.
Warmest congratulations to our Professor!
